Virus checking software and firewalls - what are they and do I need to use these with Internet Banking?
Most reputable computer consultants and industry experts recommend you use both virus checking software and firewalls when undertaking any activity on the Internet, not just Internet Banking. Where your computer is permanently connected to the Internet, as may be the case with a broadband connection, the use of an effective firewall becomes almost mandatory if you wish to protect your computer from malicious attacks and misuse.
What is the problem?
Malicious instructions can be sent to your computer via the Internet (often but not necessarily attached to an email), and in many cases without you being aware of it. Malicious code can also be introduced to your computer via floppy discs, CDs, DVDs and memory sticks. This activity can:
- cause damage to the data or programs on your computer's hard drive;
- cause your computer to send emails or malicious code to other computers; and or
- record information from your computer and send it to third parties, often with fraudulent intent. Generally this 'malware' code is known as a virus, worm or trojan.
What is a firewall and should I use one?
A firewall is a piece of computer hardware or software designed to monitor traffic into and out of your computer. It is generally used when a computer is connected to the Internet to allow traffic in or out that you have authorised, and to block or alert you to traffic that you have not authorised.
Firewalls require some basic instructions from you when they are first set up. This includes information about the legitimate sources they will allow traffic from and what they allow to be sent out, again to legitimate recipients.
Software based firewalls are often installed for private and small business use and fortunately many of these are now relatively easy to use, with simple instructions to tell them what they should or shouldn't allow in or out. Windows XP has a basic firewall as part of the operating system, however many industry commentators recommend the use of additional firewall protection.
Some commonly used software firewalls include: ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall, McAfee Personal Firewall and Tiny Personal Firewall.
Some firewalls are available for free when they are used for personal use (eg. ZoneAlarm) and some industry commentators consider these adequate for normal usage.
For business use, a licence fee usually applies, however the business versions often contain additional functionality and support that the free versions do not.
Firewall software can often be downloaded from supplier websites or reputable Australian monthly computer magazine CDs in either free, paid for licenced or trial versions, as well as from reputable outlets.

What is anti-virus software and should I use it?
In essence, anti-virus software monitors the data that comes into your computer and looks for known malicious code (ie. a virus). When identified, most anti-virus software alerts you to the find and quarantines or otherwise renders the code harmless.
Similarly, many anti-virus programs will monitor your outward email to ensure you are not unknowingly forwarding malicious code with it.
Many viruses have been programmed by their author to cause damage to your computer by deleting or corrupting information and, in some cases, to use your email or computer as a host to replicate itself to others. Some code seeks personal information from your computer to transmit it without your knowledge, in some cases with fraudulent intent.
It is most important that should you install an anti-virus program that you keep it up-to-date. This is most commonly done by regularly connecting to the anti-virus software manufacturer's website and downloading the latest information, thus affording your computer the latest available protection.
Some commonly used anti-virus programs include Norton AntiVirus, McAfee Virusscan, Trend Micro PC-Cillin and AVG (Grisoft).
Some anti-virus programs are available free when they are used for personal use (eg. AVG) and some industry commentators consider these adequate for normal usage.
For business use, a licence fee usually applies, however the business versions often contain additional functionality and support that the free versions do not.
Anti-virus software can often be downloaded from supplier websites or reputable Australian monthly computer magazine CDs in either free, paid for licenced or trial versions, as well as being available for purchase from reputable retail outlets.
